Plastic Bags: Cut, Collage, Stitch

Participants will be WOWED by all the useful things you can make with a pile a colorful plastic bags. Start collecting and start fusing. Projects include a Tote Bag, Triangle Pouch, Belt, Wallet and Wind Sock. All supplies included. Just bring colorful plastic bags.

Power Tools for Women
aka Empowerment for Women through Tool Use & Safety
3 sessions: Thurs, Nov 5, 12, 19, 6-9pm
Power tools can be intimidating, until you learn how to use them safely and understand what they can do for you. With much handholding, oversight, and budding up we will get to know the chop saw, band saw, scroll, saw, jigsaw, drill press, power drill, the many hand tools, different types of wood, screws, nails and which is right for the job. You'll also learn the language of the lumberyard, so you can get what you need. No experience necessary.

LEARN TO SEW - BEGINNER BASICS

In this 3 class intensive, you will learn all the sewing basics… How to thread the machine, make a bobbin, sew seams, take out seams, hem, make a button hole, put in a zipper, and you’ll actually sew a project. Visible Mending
2 Sessions: Mon, Nov 9 & 16, 6-9pm
Visible mending is a form of repair work, usually on textile items, that is deliberately left visible (compare to invisible mending). The dual goals of this practice are to adorn the item, and to attract attention to the fact it has been mended in some way. Going forward, you will look at a torn or worn garment as an opportunity, not the end of its life.

Japanese Mending: Intro to Sashiko
1 session: Tues, Nov 10, 9am-12
Japan has a millennia-old tradition of mending that's beautiful, straightforward even for beginners to hand stitching, and highly practical to actually repair woven clothing. In this workshop, we'll talk briefly about the history, and then dive into how to patch (if necessary) and stitch patterns. There will be plenty of time to practice and get started on your own project. No experience necessary! Fee includes a sashiko needle and thread plus materials for a patch.

Pop-Up Cards

Bring your systematic thinking cap and explore some introductory one-piece techniques. Plus a couple of two-dimensional paper engineered devices often used in pop-ups. All materials provided.

The Altered Book
& Visual Journaling
1 session: Sat, Nov 21, 10am-4pm
Come learn a fun way to repurpose old books that you no longer want to read. Learn to reuse an old book as the foundation for a visual journal. Recreate a book into a work of art that is made of several small, personal works of art. Together we will learn how to deconstruct a book and reconstruct it through collage, drawing, painting and the written word. And all the while we will be recycling materials! This is a fun and rewarding process that does not require previous art making skill or training. Participants will walk away with their very own art book, a repurposed book that will be the beginning of their personal journey into visual journaling.

Does your bike need a tune up? Air? Brakes? Chain? Learn how to fix a Flat Tire, Chain Care, Tire Inflation, and more. BYO bike on the 2nd class. No experience necessary. 50% of the proceeds go to The Landing Place.

Upcycled Mittens
1 session: Sat, Nov 28, 1-4pm
Learn how to turn that old sweater into a warm winter pair of cozy mittens. Bring a holy, outsized or thrifted sweater (or two or three) for a combo and we’ll cut them up and machine sew. No sewing experience necessary, but welcome. Bring your sewing machine if you have one.

Upcycling Artificial Greenery into Garlands & Wreaths
1 session: Tues, Dec 1, 6-9pm
Do you have artificial greenery, flowers, berries or the like that have seen better days (or never was very high quality to begin with)? With a little ingenuity and basic skills, you can convert them into much more festive holiday decorations. We'll learn how to deconstruct existing stems or wreaths, use paint and watered glue to make leaves look more real (or more festive!), cut leaves into new shapes, and then how to use wire and floral tape to reconstruct them into stems, garlands, wreaths and and centerpieces.

Ditch the wrapping paper and learn to sew some gift bags that will keep on giving. Learn pattern and construct of 3 basic shapes: pillow case, bottle, and shopping bag. Explore closures. All materials provided.
